The Griswold Public Library provides community members and visitors a
collection of information in a variety of formats and resources. The library
promotes personal growth to people of all ages by providing materials that
support cultural, social, and other recreational needs. Within the next five
years, the Griswold Public Library will strive to provide parents of young
children programs and services designed to prepare children for school,
provide electronic historical newspapers and information, establish a
central source of community information for new and existing

Our History

1914 The Women’s Civic Club sought to establish a library for the town of Griswold. They were able to open one in a room above the hardware store on the south side of Main Street. The first librarian, Mrs. E. McCarthy, was paid $5 a month to keep the library running
1922 The library moved to a room at the back of the bank where it stayed for 5 years, rent free. They collected 10 cents a week from the businesses on Main Street to help pay expenses. The librarian was paid $18 a month 1933 The library outgrew the back room and moved to the city hall building 1940 The City of Griswold took over the sponsorship of the library 1954 The Summer Reading Program started 1977 The brick building was completed at 505 Main Street 2003 The catalog was digitized 2005 The library received State Library of Iowa Accreditation for the first time on July 1st Fall 2005 The empty building next door was purchased and fundraising began to complete the renovation of the space. 2013 Renovation and Expansion completed to double the size of the library |
